You ever read something about history and then just find yourself looking for more historical information? Half my Web searching seems to be devoted to learning more about the past. Today’s tour of the past started with this forum discussion about ancient UFO reports investigated by the Romans. Yeah, NASA says that UFOs are not new. How crazy is that?
Reading that discussion reminded me of an old history Website I found sometime back. One of the cool articles on that site is a history of games and gaming going back thousands of years. I guess the first guy to make a board game was a hit at parties.
Games can be divided into “games of skill” and “games of chance”. Some games combine both chance and skill. Game historians are not sure which came first, skill or chance. I bet our hunter-gatherer ancestors were probably using games to hone their skills and pass the time away.
When most people think about history I guess they imagine romantic castles and knights in shining armor riding about the countryside. Damsels in distress must have been really popular when the knights were not jousting or away fighting in wars.
Honestly, I don’t mean to belittle history. History is important to us for many reasons, but it’s also just damned interesting to me. You wonder about how people did all sorts of things. And why they did them.
You know, if you’re looking for a history of gambling there are plenty of sites that give you their points of view. I even found an article about the history of online poker so you know there is just about every type of history article out there.
One minute you’re reading about Romans and UFOs and the next you’re thinking, “Maybe I can use some strategy in my next poker session”.
How crazy is that?
